Ten practical money steps to finish the year strong: review spending, plan your taxes before 31 March, check your CIBIL score and loans, and line up next year's property goals.

The last weeks of the year are the best time to tidy up your finances. A little planning now means fewer surprises at tax time, a stronger loan profile and clearer goals for 2027. Here are ten steps worth taking before 31 December.
- Review the year's spending: Group what you spent in 2026 into needs, wants and savings. Most people find two or three regular costs they can cut, such as unused subscriptions or frequent food delivery.
- List every loan and EMI: Write down each loan, its interest rate and the months left. If a home loan rate is well above what banks offer today, ask your bank about a lower rate or consider a balance transfer.
- Check your CIBIL score: Download your free credit report and correct any errors, such as a closed card still shown as open. A score above 750 usually gets the best home loan rates.
- Plan your taxes before the financial year closes: The financial year ends on 31 March 2027. Decide now whether the old or the new tax regime suits you, and if you use the old regime, complete Section 80C investments and health insurance payments in time instead of rushing in March.
- Build or top up an emergency fund: Keep three to six months of expenses in a savings account or liquid fund that you can reach quickly.
- Review insurance cover: Make sure your health cover is enough for your family, and that term life cover matches your loans and responsibilities.
- Set clear goals for 2027: Buying a home, upgrading, or investing in a plot? Put a number and a date on it, and work out the down payment you will need, usually 10 to 20 percent of the price plus registration costs.
- Get your home loan eligibility checked early: If you plan to buy next year, find out how much you can borrow now. It helps you shortlist the right properties and negotiate with confidence.
- Organise your documents: Keep PAN, Aadhaar, salary slips, Form 16, bank statements, property papers and loan statements together, both on paper and as scanned copies.
- Talk to an expert: A short conversation with a financial or property advisor can save you money on loans, taxes and property decisions.
